The use of Picture and sound in Learning environments as a powerful interactive and inclusive tool

The Course is addressed to those interested in introducing non- formal media education practices in their classrooms and acquiring hands-on experience and skills on creative media productions. This Erasmus Course was created from a need to offer participants digital tools to create narratives that promote inclusion and free expression. The methodology provides a comprehensive framework for incorporating media-making techniques into the educational environment, transforming traditional teaching into an engaging, creative, and inclusive experience. 

Through a blend of theory and practical application, participants will explore how media productions can be powerful tools for inclusive learning, enabling students to express themselves and develop critical digital skills. The course consists of:

  • a basic introduction to key concepts of media literacy, equipment and effective digital tools for media production;
  • a project-based hands-on advanced workshop focused on expression and inclusion

 

 Objectives -Learning Outcomes:

  • Co-design, co-create media content
  • Develop media making competences in dealing with a variety of film genres and themes
  • Understand key concepts of media literacy regarding audio and visual expression
  • Design of media literacy experiences based on documentary concepts
  • Arts infused storytelling techniques;
  • Understand the workflow of a media production in low budget levels.
  • Understand and test basic editing in free or very low budget software.

Methodology

The course is addressed to those interested in enhancing and sharpening their creative media production skills in the wider field of filmmaking, audiovisual work and use of a variety of devices and equipment for semi professional use. Skills acquired aim to enhance both personal development and the design of activities for youth or adult groups in a variety of educational environments. Our methods focus and are suitable for inclusive practice, intercultural and interdisciplinary applications. We have extended experience in documentary production through which we focus on exploration, observation, development of social and cultural themes. The training methodology emphasises the connection of hands on work to embodied theory. The sessions focus on the importance of storytelling, through inspiration from a variety of everyday sources and encounters. There are sessions which focus on design and implementation of activities inspired by a mixture of arts in education practices: media, photography, theater, visual arts. We foster practice through a variety of digital devices to build confidence and flexibility. Our final goal is to develop critical thinking in the media ecosystem and enjoy cultural experiences. The sessions provide training in the theory, operating methods and use of different tools that support media making.

The cost includes coffee break & supportive learning material. Also 2 outdoor shooting sessions & a tour is included.

Course Information


  • Participants who attend at least 80% of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance on the last day.

  • Classes are scheduled either in the morning or in the afternoon, and the programme schedule may slightly vary from the preliminary one.

Programme

DAY 1

Welcome, getting to know each other, through group, drama and digital device games.

Introduction to storytelling through short films. Visit to: unique views of the historical centre. Location based photography practice.

DAY 2

Introduction to equipment, technologies, platforms and tools for digital media making.

Field trip and sound recording. Brainstorming and drafting of themes and styles in groups.

DAY 3

Research and draft shooting. Exporting and saving rushes. Taxonomy and selection process.

Discussion about story, representation, style and possible applications with groups. Planning for the final shoot.

DAY 4

Basics of editing, testing and applying to the material collected.

DAY 5

Finalising editing.

Methodological issues of production with and without groups. Departure.

Maria Leonida

Film maker - Media Educator

Film director and Media Educator. Her documentaries have been screened in Film Festivals and TV channels around Europe. Since 2002 she works as a Media Educator and is the director of Karpos - Centre for Media Education. She designs media workshops for various programs in and outside schools both for children and adult educators. Maria trained in filmmaking in London and Denmark. She holds a BA in History and an MA in Art History and is currently a PHD candidate at the University of Athens, researching early childhood media issues.

Anastasia Vlachaki

Photographer - Art Practitioner

Graduate of the Department of Photography and Audiovisual Arts of the University of West Attica. She has also studied graphic design and video art. In 2014 she obtained a postgraduate diploma specializing in MA Inclusive Arts Practice in Brighton, England and in 2018 she completed a two-year program in Synthetic Play&Act. Since then she has been working as an animator and creator of artistic workshops in collaboration with various organizations (Save the Children, Network for Children's Rights, Momus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, etc.) but also as a coordinator of audio-visual workshops (Municipality of Athens - Curing the Limbo, Karpos). Her photographic work Event Horizon has won praise at the Photographic Meetings of Kythira in 2011, has been presented in 2012 in a solo exhibition, and has been included in the album and participated in a group exhibition under the title Hellenic Seas, A Photographic Journey Through Time in 2013 by Museum Benaki. In 2018, she participated with the photographic work One dress Many Costumes in the group exhibition of contemporary Greek photographers on the subject of self-portraiture at Momus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.
